How to Measure a Ring for a Surprise
If you’re planning a surprise, here are a few tips:
Send us a photo
Our expert team have years of experience guessing ring sizes. Simply send us a photo of the person, with hands in the frame (perhaps their holding a phone for a selfie, or a drink), and we’ll do our best to guesstimate their ring size.
Measuring a Ring You Already Own:
Whilst not so accurate, but a decent estimate, if you can borrow a ring that fits the recipient well, measure the inside diameter and use the ring size chart below to find the corresponding size.

Additional Ring Sizing Tips
- Measure at the Right Time:
Measure your finger size at the end of the day when your fingers are warm. Finger size can vary throughout the day and with temperature changes. - Consider Knuckle Size:
If your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size in between the two. The ring should fit over your knuckle but not be too loose once it’s on. - Width of the Band, or Wearing more than 1 Ring:
Keep in mind that wider bands fit more snugly than thinner bands. You might need to go up a half size for wider bands. This is the same for wearing 2-3 rings stacked together. Whilst your engagement ring may fit nicely now, adding a wedding and eternity band, may make them all feel a little tight.
What Not to Do: Ring Sizing Mistakes
Measuring with a String and Ruler:
Using a string and ruler might seem easy, but it’s not always accurate.
A string is flexible and can stretch, giving you an incorrect measurement.
Additionally, it doesn’t account for the width and thickness of a real ring, nor does it take into consideration the need to fit over the knuckle.
Measuring Against an Existing Ring:
Avoid measuring a ring that isn’t worn on the same finger.
Finger sizes vary, so a ring that fits one finger might not fit another.
Also, ensure the ring is perfectly round; otherwise, you’ll get an inaccurate measurement.
Using a Paper Strip:
Similar to a string, a paper strip can provide an inaccurate measurement.
Paper can bend and fold, resulting in a size that doesn’t accurately reflect your finger’s circumference.
Relying on Old Measurements:
Finger sizes can change over time due to weight fluctuations, temperature, and other factors. Always measure your ring size anew rather than relying on old measurements.
Measuring in Extreme Temperatures:
Don’t measure your finger size when your hands are very cold or very hot. This can affect the accuracy of the measurement.
